Caterina Sforza was a central figure of the Italian Renaissance. Born to Milan's Sforza line, she married a pope's illegitimate son. A deft power broker, she seized Castel Sant'Angelo and forced the College of Cardinals to yield, making her name in Rome.
In 1488, after her husband's assassination, she became regent for her young son and ruled Forli and Imola. She crushed unrest, steadied the army, and repelled repeated attacks, securing her family's rule.
Over the next decade she strengthened fortifications, improved governance, and eased taxes. In 1499 French and papal forces besieged Forli. She refused to surrender, fought for months in armor, and fell only after a hard defense. She was hailed as the "Tiger of Forli".
Beyond politics she loved gardening, studied alchemy and remedies, and supported arts and letters. Her collections remain prized. Through
