Marshal of the French Empire, considered one of the greatest generals in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1799, to swiftly break the threat of the Second Coalition against France, the French commander André Masséna decided to lead 70,000 French troops in a final decisive battle against the 90,000-strong Russo-Austrian army stationed in Zürich. With his exceptional military foresight, Masséna devised a brilliant strategy of defeating the enemy forces in detail. He divided the French army into several detachments, used the cover of night and river passages for surprise attacks on enemy positions, and personally led elite troops in a daring assault on the strategic point of Zurich Fortress. Masséna's ingenious tactics rendered the numerical superiority of the Russo-Austrian forces ineffective, as the French army seized a commanding offensive position, forcing the enemy into chaotic retreat. After a day of fierce combat, the battlefield of Zurich ultimately became a site of victory for the French forces.
