Amr ibn al-As was promoted with the expansion of the Arab Empire. In 639, Amr launched the conquest of Byzantine Egypt, defeating the Byzantines in a string of victories. Byzantines gathered the main army in Egypt to attack Amr when he besieged Babylon Fortress. Amr's army defended the attack of Byzantine army, and the war became a war of attrition. However, Amr seized the critical moment and ordered the ambushed cavalries to charge into the battlefield, and the Byzantine army was defeated in chaos.
