Born in the camps of Pannonia, he won renown under Gallienus and Aurelian, rising through the legions by merit. When the eastern army placed the imperial purple upon him, he secured Rome's allegiance with the patience of a veteran commander, avoiding needless bloodshed. As emperor, Probus spent his reign defending the frontiers. In Gaul, he crushed the Germanic tribes, drove back the Franks and Vandals, and reclaimed more than seventy lost cities.
